Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
