The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
